A Statement From Independent Mayoral Candidate Kevin Acklin on the Possible State Takeover of the City's Pension Fund
I share the pain and disappointment that our city employees are feeling today. I come from a family of working people who've dedicated their lives to public service in Pittsburgh. My grandmother lives off the pension that my grandfather earned as a Battalion Chief in the city of Pittsburgh Fire Department. If the city's pension fund runs dry, so does her livelihood. There a few greater insults than dedicating your life in service to a city, and having that city's leadership fail to honor the promise it made to you and to your family.
When I'm Mayor, I'll reach out to my colleagues in the state house, to Mayor Nutter in Philadelphia, to any interested political leader in Pennsylvania, to avoid a moment of crisis like this. Most importantly, I won't treat City Council as adversaries; I'll meet with them right away to start working together on ways to solve our problems. When I'm elected, that's the type of forward-thinking, productive leadership the people of Pittsburgh will get. We need a Mayor who can anticipate our problems, who can plan for our future, and who is capable of building bridges across both state and party lines to solve our city's problems.
