KEVIN ACKLIN RESPONDS TO URA CLAIM THAT HIS PENSION NUMBERS ARE "CRAP"
Independent mayoral candidate cites the authority's own year-end financial statements to support his plan
PITTSBURGH – Independent Mayoral Candidate Kevin Acklin today reiterated the strength of his pension plan and his understanding of what's going on in the city's neighborhoods. Acklin noted that his numbers come from the authority's own year-end financial statement, a publicly available document that he'll make available on his web site for anyone who wants to read it.
The URA's most recent Statement of Net Assets, compiled by the Maher Duessel accounting firm and dated December 31, 2008, clearly lists its "Total Assets" as $416.8 million. Those same financials, found on page 1 of the report, also list "Cash and investments" totaling $224.7 million.
"Obviously, the URA has a plan for how to spend our tax dollars. But I have a different plan," Acklin said. "When I'm Mayor, I'll use every resource at the city's disposal to invest in our neighborhoods."
“The URA said yesterday that they have long had a 'laser focus' on the neighborhoods. I'm sure when people in Beechview and Brookline and Sheraden, in the North Side and the West End and the South Hills saw that quote, they fell out of their chairs. Ask a voter in Sheraden how much work has been done in her neighborhood. Ask a voter in Brookline how long he's been waiting for the redevelopment of the Boulevard. Ask voters in Overbrook how many libraries, pools, and parks they have," Acklin said.
"If what we have now is the URA's neighborhood investment plan, then it's clear we need new leadership on Grant Street," Acklin said.
