KEVIN ACKLIN ANNOUNCES NEIGHBORHOOD-FOCUSED PUBLIC SAFETY PLAN
Independent mayoral candidate pledges increased investment, community involvement in Police Force
PITTSBURGH – Kevin Acklin, the Independent candidate for Mayor of the city of Pittsburgh, announced his Neighborhood Public Safety Plan at a press conference at his South Side campaign headquarters. The Acklin Plan calls for an increased police presence in the neighborhoods, more investments in our police force, and a comprehensive officer retention program to make sure Pittsburgh's most experienced officers stay on the city’s police force.
“The plan starts with a real commitment to neighborhood-based policing,” Acklin said. “When I'm talking to voters at community meetings, or on their front porches, or in their living rooms, they tell me that there is too much crime in Pittsburgh, and that more needs to be done to stop it.”
The Acklin Plan calls for:
• Investments in neighborhood block watches, to provide for better communication with residents and police officers
• A commitment of more officers to neighborhood patrols, with more visibility in our neighborhood business districts and playgrounds
• A commitment for more officers to attend school and community events, before crime occurs, focus on safety education and crime prevention
• An emphasis on attacking the sources of criminal activity by investing in domestic violence prevention and promoting drug and alcohol treatment options for non- violent offenders
• The creation of a Neighborhood Safety Commission, within the Mayor's office, comprised of public safety experts, active duty police officers, and community leaders to advise Mr. Acklin and to implement a neighborhood safety plan
